LECTURES

Week 1: Introduction&Briefing

During the first class, we were briefed about the module and checked the module information booklet with lecturer. And Mr. Vinod show us how to create our e-portfolios. Step by step showed us how to create and upload content to the blog.

And in the afternoon, the second lecturer Mr.Shamsul taught us some basic method of operation of Adobe Illustration.

Week 2:Typographic Development
The second lecture focused on history and how typography developed over the years in a western.  It covered how the letters developed from Phoenicians to the roman alphabet we use today, and different scripts and the brush and stroke techniques used while forming them.
Next we move onto how text was classified into type families and type faces. These are basically the fonts we use on a daily basis.

Week 3:
This weeks lecture was about text formatting and how text is presented in a body of text. I Next we moved on to text formatting. This part emphasizes on different types of formatting and how tracking is used when formatting a text in a certain where to make it appear more pleasing to the reader.
Next we moved onto textures which showed how different typefaces give different appearance to a body of text. This part shows how some typefaces have more contrast or gradient compared to others as a result of the differences in stroke sizes.

Week 4:
This weeks lecture was part 2 of text. First the lecturer went into detail about paragraph spacing and leading and how these work. Basically the leading should be 3 or 3 points bigger than the letter size. So if the text is 10pt, the leading should be 12 or 13pt. Then he explained what widows and orphans are and how they can be avoided. Widows are the ending words of a sentence transferred to a new line because the space ran out and orphan is when the last part of a line moves to the next page.
The last part the lecturer explained was headlines. There are 3 different types of headlines. A heads, B heads and C heads. A heads have a break of the text body. B heads don't have a major interruption from the body and C heads are basically within the text body without any interruptions. All these headlines can be highlighted using italics, bold or using different type faces.

Week 5:
This weeks lecture was about letters and the understanding of the complexity of fonts or type families. First point to note is that although letters may seem symmetrical they are usually not. From afar it may seem so but when inspected up close they mostly 90% symmetrical. Next we moved on to comparing letters from different typefaces, Emphasizing on the difference of strokes and curves on the letters. They mostly very minor changes which show a major difference. The lecture also touches on the height, counter forms and the contrast between typefaces, and why this occurs.

Exercises

Type expressions(week 1)

We chose 6 words using a Facebook poll to express using 9 given type families. The words were Loud, Drown, Fly, Disappear, Push, Hidden or Kill/Love. Initially we must make sketches for each word and roughly digitize them in Adobe Illustrator.

Type Expression Animation (Week 2)

For week 2 we must animate a typeface from the ones we have done. The animation is to be done in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. My choice is ''kill''.

Week 4: Text Formatting

Our third task was to format text in Adobe InDesign, this was my first time using InDesign. The program was very nice to use and easy to follow.
Firstly, we had to make ourselves a name card.We had to choose a font that we thought represents ourselves well. I chose the font Futura std,I choose this is because it looks very simple and easy to identify.

FEEDBACK

Week 1:
General Feedback:
We were given many tips on doing this certain exercise on Adobe Illustrator by Mr. Shamsul.

Week 2:
General Feedback:
1.The photos of sketching are no problems 2. Don't do so much illustrated on it.3.“KILL” try to make it different .4.Re-work on “FLY” 5.“LOUD” lecturer did not understand ,I did it again.
Specific Feedback:
The rest of the typeface expressions are fine. Can proceed to animating one of the six typeface expressions.
Week 3:
This week is no class here.

Week4: General Feedback
Mr.Vinod tell us to read more book about design.

REFLECTIONS

Week 1:

Experiences: Creating a blog and learning how to manage, saw some interesting design of typography, it was a new experience.

Observations: I am not good enough at English and I have to keep going on English, to understand more knowledge through the class time. And Mr.Vinod's laugh is very cute.

Findings: I need concentration of the class and take note all the time, and I feeling good when I focuses on something.

Week 2:

Experience: It's not easy to create a perfect artwork. We have to be very concentrate during the class so that we won't miss any important information.

Observations: We need to design and sketched very carefully to fully express the words.Do not do any illustration on type design, It is very interesting.

Findings: After reworking and editing my artwork many times,  finally it present a better work expression. So I can continue with the next exercises.

Week 3:

There are no class this week.

Week 4:
Experience: First experience using Adobe In-design.

Observation: In design is quite similar to illustrator, apart from a few differences. In design is mostly geared towards text based work.I think the grid tool is very useful.

Finding: Learned some more details about text formatting. Including the rules of kerning, point sizes, ragging, line alignment etc.

FURTHER READING

Week1&Week2
figure4.1:上海字记
This book uses visual clues from Shanghai's 100-year-old printed matter to build a systematic, objective, and clear basic file for the traces and context of Chinese character writing and design after traditional calligraphy. These legends have preserved the memories of education, economy, politics, culture, art, and daily life in Shanghai in the 20th century through handwriting, design, and reproduction of modern printing techniques such as stone printing, type printing, and offset printing.

Week3&Week4
figure4.2:字型散步

The first Chinese-language book focusing on Taiwan ’s life issues. The font is a meeting of many issues: history, aesthetics, design and social culture. Of course, it is still a technological product in essence. In this book I learned the typography is so important in people’s daily life.I also can foresee the evolution of Chinese typography in future.
