LECTURES
Week 7:
We were given the briefing for project 2. We have to design our very own typeface, starting from scratch. We were shown a video of how typefaces are made to get a basic idea and know we better to start with "H","O","D". I have first time to know about "x-height". We can look back at lecture of week 5 as it was about font design. In class we had to pick a type face for reference and do sketches.

Lecture excerise:
We created three 1100pt x 1100pt artboard to analyze the letters O, H, and D by drawing the guideline.
Project2A progress:
PROJECT 2A:
First, I created fourteen 1100pt x 1100pt new artboard for each letter.
Then I choose the third typo design as my final work. Because it is cute, and esay to standardize. I call this type "FatBoy".
After that, I creat the small elements part of this type.
And when I try to create the shape of the letter"B","A". I found it is very hard to make the letter"A","B" in balance. Because this font is a very bold font, I tried lots of way to solute it, But actually not work.
After all, my first outcome with guideline is bellow there.
To sum up, this lamp needs to be powered on, so as a font, I hope to use the characteristics of this powered interface to my font.
Next, I proceeded to export the font I created. I decided to name it "NEON0.5".

LECTURES
Week 7:
Week 8:
In this lecture we were looking further into letterforms. As some uppercase letters perceive symmetry, sometimes it is not the case. There are unique arks in serif letters which creates a different serif for thinner and ticker stokes.Sanserif does not have brackets, they also have slight variations. Such as the width of the slopes differ from stoke to stoke. This maybe a minor effect but it could be a major change when in all the letters.

PROJECT 2A:
- FRIST OUTCOME "FatBoy"
First, I created fourteen 1100pt x 1100pt new artboard for each letter.
Then I choose the third typo design as my final work. Because it is cute, and esay to standardize. I call this type "FatBoy".
After that, I creat the small elements part of this type.
figure3.1:small elements of type "FatBoy"
I use all these elements above to compose my font“FatBoy”.

figur3.5:Character Construction Letter "I"
figur3.6:Letter "I"
figur3.7:Character Construction Letter "G"
figur3.8:Letter "G"
I used the same circles as before to create smooth round edges.
And when I try to create the shape of the letter"B","A". I found it is very hard to make the letter"A","B" in balance. Because this font is a very bold font, I tried lots of way to solute it, But actually not work.
After all, my first outcome with guideline is bellow there.
figure3.9: first outcome with guideline
figure3.10: first outcome of "FatBoy"
figure4.1:reference of neon lamp1
This is my first outcome. On week7 lecture, Mr.Vinod gave me lots og feedback, he think I should do more on letter "B". However, I adjust it lots of times, still can not found a good solution, I feel not satisfact with “FatBoy”.
Then I try to creat a better design in Project 2A.
- Second design "NEON0.5" came out:
After "FatBoy" s fail. I try to create a font which everyone who saw this font will have a same feeling or associate same thing.
Then I hang out, I saw Neon sign arround me, so I think the neon lamp will be a very good selection to help me finish Project 2A.
When I decided to do this as my own font, I did some research on neon lamp.
figure4.2:reference of neon lamp2
When I saw lots of picture of neon ,try to find the basic structure of neon lamp.
To sum up, this lamp needs to be powered on, so as a font, I hope to use the characteristics of this powered interface to my font.
And all the corner I think need to be soft.
Then I did some sketch of"Neon0.5".
figure4.3: Sketch of "Neon0.5"
Then I use illustration to create this font, at that time, I hope all the letter can be neater, and found a standard to control all the letter.
figure4.4:Character Construction Letter "A"

figur4.6:Character Construction Letter "I"
figur4.7:Letter "I"
figur4.9:Letter "G"
Then I find a way to deal with it. The power connector is set in the same position in very letter. And found a comfortable arc to build every corner.

After digitizing all the characters, we were asked to merge all paths into one path and import the characters to FontLab. First, to create a new file we went to font info; metrics and dimensions and key in the dimensions for the ascender, median, baseline and the descender. We were instructed to calculate the measurements from the base line.

figure4.13: Imported to FontLab
Once all the characters were imported, I moved on to adjust the kerning as instructed. I selected all the characters and clicked to new metrics window.

figure4.16:NEON0.5 Final Font; PDF
Next, I proceeded to export the font I created. I decided to name it "NEON0.5".
After generating the font, we were asked to create a poster with the phrase “I am a type god, obey me.” as the final task for the project.
First I did some version of final poster. because the neon light is ligting in night, so I choose black as my background.
figure4.16:NEON0.5 poster demo1
figure4.17:NEON0.5 poster demo2
After Mr Vinod 's feedback, he think "OBEY ME" need to be smaller, and "NEON0.5 by ZHAO HANBO"should use 8 point size.
And to me, I want my final poster more like a real neon lamp on the wall, so I create a circle, which make it more vivid.

REFLECTIONS
Experience:When I started the project with the dissection, I learned how characters are constructed. I knew how to create certain arcs and angles after that, and it helped with the rest of the project. And learn how to dig more and more new idea from daily life.
Observation: I also observed how round letters go beyond the median and descender. I observed how a minor angle of the stem or stroke can throw off the whole sentence off balance. This made me redo certain characters along the way.
Findings: Without prior understanding of how typefaces are created, I found it challenging at first. Actually this work is not easy to me, at first trying, I just try to make all the letter in same style, but do not know how to make it look nice, and no any princple. I find out good design is always came from the observation of daily life. This time to me is a definatly level up.

FURTHER READING
figure5.1:JUST MY TYPE by Simon Garfield
We read this book for a history of books and printing reading group. We've read other typographic history works as well, and this was one of the more disappointing.
It jumps around a good deal, and abruptly introduces people and topics with little prelude. I think is is simply because it is fundamentally derivative. Read Simon Loxley's book. We read it for our reading group as well a few years before. Better written, better illustrations, more comprehensive, and even better designed. Garfield even used many anecdotes from that book which is cited in his bibliography.
I think Garfield's book benefited from the movie HELVETICA which came out after Loxley's and from excellent PR placement, including Amazon's best of the month, but if you have done much reading on recent Typographic history it is clearly standing on the shoulders of better works. Garfield's later ON THE MAP shows the same flaws, though more clearly.2 stars because it did introduce the topic to a wider audience.
