INSTRUCTION

PROJECT 1A

W5(16/09/2020)

This project are tasked to create a key artwork to be used in collateral for the subsequent task down the line. We must use visual elements or graphical elements and the title (type) in an experimentative, impactful and visually attractive manner.

The three event titles topics:
- All Ripped Up: Punk Influences on Design
- The ABCs of Bauhaus Design Theory
- Russian Constructivism and Graphic Design

Personaly, I have strong interest on Bauhaus, so I picked the sencond topic as my project 1A 's topic.

First I need do lots of research on Bauhaus, What are the key features of Bauhaus?

First I start with Bauhaus's history, I scrapt some key features from there:

Uniting art with craft and mass production

Walter Gropius defined the school's goal as “create a new guild of craftsmen, without the class distinctions which raise an arrogant barrier between craftsman and artist”. Essentially, this meant that craft tradition was merged with modern technology, in order to cater to the needs of the system of mass-production; an ideal that was both practical and necessary in order to rebuild the country.

Form follows function

The American architect Louis Sullivan was one of the first to use the famous expression 'form follows function'. This simple phrase became one of the fundamental ideas of Bauhaus. It means that in design, a form should always be used for its function instead of its aesthetic appeal. The utility should come first and excessive ornamentations were avoided.

Honest materials

According to the teachers at Bauhaus, materials should reflect the true nature of objects and buildings. This meant the school of Bauhaus taught its students not to modify or hide materials for the sake of aesthetics. The construction of an object or building was not hidden but instead made an integral part of the design.

Minimalism

The minimalist style of Bauhaus art, architecture and design reflected these ideas of functionality and honest materials. Influenced by movements such as Modernism and De Stijl, and as a counter-movement to the Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles; Bauhaus artists favoured linear and geometrical forms, while floral or curvilinear shapes were avoided. Only line, shape and colour mattered. Anything else was unnecessary and needed to be reduced.

Total work of art

At the core of Bauhaus lies the idea of the 'Gesamtkunstwerk', a synthesis in which multiple art forms are unified through architecture. A building was not just an empty vessel for the Bauhaus school, it was one element of the total design, and everything inside added to the overall concept.

After research part I got a raw idea, that is I want to use three simple figure(triangle, square, circle) to design some thing.

figure1.0:first try key art work

figure1.1:first try key art work

For the frist try, Mr. Vinoda give me some feedback: He think this one is too simple. Maybe it can be a banner or something else, but not a good key art work.

After his feedback,I decided to use three simple figure(triangle, square, circle) to design a new font, I hope this font can looks like very minimalism. So I start work on it.

figure1.2:bauhaus font

Then I start to using this font as my key point to design my key art work.

figure1.3:second try key art work

figure1.4:second try key art work

figure1.5:second try key art work

Then I got the feedback from Mr. Vinod in week 6's lecture. He also like this font, buthhe think if all this font can arrange in a grid maybe will be good. Then I accept his advise.

figure1.6:final outcome key art work

And I need to use this to design a poster, so I came to the poster part, At the first of begining I am supper confident at this part and done my first attampt of poster. Let's see togeter.

figure2.0: first try on poster1

figure2.1: first try on poster2

But after this two poster I still can not feel conforterble to my own work, so I start crazy try on it.

figure2.3:some try on poster

figure2.4:some try on poster

figure2.5:some try on poster

figure2.6:some try on poster

figure2.7: some try on poster

After lots of try I can not feel confident with them, finally I the last time I came up with this one. So I think maybe it can be my final poster.

FEEDBACK

Week 5 :

I did a key artwork that looks more like banding and doesn't look like key art work, I need to think about it more.

Week 6:

Mr. Vinod thinks I did a great job on the special font design, If I can make it have a better arrangemengt it will be great.

REFLECTION

Experience:
Because I was held up with my key artwork I had just one week to complete my poster and collateral. I was able to manage my time and complete the work on time but I missed out on getting Feedback for my Posters as I went along.

Observation:
I noticed that I wasn't the only one struggling with finalizing a Key artwork, Some of my other classmates were also having the problems. I also realized that getting my work approved was much faster this week because I had a set idea behind the works.

Findings:
Even though my key artworks were rejected many times over, I realized that it helped me to reach a better result. If I just gone with a previous work I would have struggled with coming up with good poster and collateral designs. Since I had a clear idea and good Key artwork the work that followed was much easier to complete and I was able to come up with strong and engaging designs.

Freehand new typography sketchbooks by Steven Heller and Lita Talarico
This book is filled with imagery that shows a process as the designer looks for a specific form, this begins to create a pleasing pattern on each page . Each of these designs are accompanied by the opinions of the designers themselves an this really gives an insight into the thought process of the creator. The book is compiled of highlights from various designer sketchbooks and this gives a very broad look at the creative struggles that each of them go through before coming to final product. Some of the pages also has collages, scraps of paper scribble though etc. This book is very helpful to students like us as it shows how to come up with compositions , color schemes and how to use drawing to achieve the desired designs.
